Born in Greenwood, South Carolina, John McKissick attended high school in Kingstree where he lettered in football, basketball, baseball and boxing. During World War II he served with the 82nd Airborne Division. After the war he earned degrees from Brevard College, Presbyterian College, and a master's degree in psychology and education from Western Carolina University. In 1952 he became the head football coach at Summerville High School. Between 1978 and 1980 his teams won 41 consecutive games, the longest winning streak in South Carolina. In 2004 Coach McKissick completed 53 years of coaching football with a record of 510 wins, the most victories by any football coach on any level and the most wins at one school. Coach McKissick is a member of the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, the National High School Sports Hall of Fame, and twice was named National High School Football Coach of the Year.
