InducteesFrom signing the Declaration of Independence to landing on the moon, the sons and daughters of South Carolina have played a part in some of the most momentous events in modern history. Each year, two notable South Carolinians are inducted into the South Carolina Hall of Fame located in the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. The gallant procession of statesmen, scientists, artists, soldiers, clergymen, teachers, bankers and athletics is represented in the gallery of color portraits hung in the Hall of Fame Lobby. Inductees include President Andrew Jackson, Author Elizabeth Coker, Jazz Legend Dizzy Gillespie, Painter Jasper Johns, General William C. Westmoreland, Senator J. Strom Thurmond, and more than 60 others. Astronaut Charles M. Duke, Jr. actually carried a South Carolina flag on his journey to the moon. A replica of the footprints Duke made on the moon is embedded in concrete in front of the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. |
